bokashiliemi

Bokashiliemi, or bokashi liquid, is the liquid effluent produced during bokashi composting. It collects in the bottom reservoir of a bokashi bin as anaerobic fermentation of mixed kitchen waste proceeds with an inoculated bokashi bran.

Production and composition: The waste is layered with bokashi bran containing lactic acid bacteria and other microorganisms. The sealed, low-oxygen environment promotes fermentation, and a small amount of liquid drains from the waste. The liquid typically contains organic acids, minerals, and microbial metabolites and carries a sour aroma.

Uses: When diluted with water, commonly at about 1:100 to 1:200, bokashi liemi can be used as a liquid fertilizer for garden soil or potted plants, or added to compost to speed decomposition and suppress odors. Do not apply undiluted. Avoid applying to delicate foliage or seeds, and test on a small area first.

Storage and safety: Keep the liquid in a sealed container away from direct sunlight; use within weeks for best results. If the liquid develops a strong, foul odor or visible mold, discard and clean the bin. Handle with gloves to avoid skin irritation from low pH.
