Boekcultuur is the set of practices, institutions and material forms surrounding books within Dutch-speaking communities. It encompasses reading habits, publishing, book design, libraries, schools and the ways in which books circulate and are discussed in society. The concept covers both the production and reception of written works, as well as the physical and digital environments in which books exist.

Historically, boekcultuur developed from manuscript culture in the Middle Ages toward printed books after the invention of the printing press, with the Netherlands playing a prominent role in the early modern printing and book trade. In the 17th century Amsterdam and Leiden became major centers of publishing and typography, and libraries grew in scope with public access and education becoming widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Koninklijke Bibliotheek and university libraries house large collections essential to research and culture.

Publishers, booksellers and lending libraries are central. Book fairs, literary festivals, schools, reading clubs and independent publishers contribute to a diverse ecosystem. Book design and typography are valued as part of cultural heritage; translations and reprints preserve access to foreign literature.

Digitalization transformed boekcultuur with e-books, online catalogs, digitization projects, and open access. Libraries provide digital lending and databases; readers engage via reviews and social reading platforms, and publishers adapt to new distribution channels.

Boekcultuur reflects literacy, education, and national and regional identity, while facing challenges such as price, access, and preservation.
