Bländare or bländaren refers to the adjustable opening in an optical system such as a camera lens, microscope, or projector that controls the amount of light that passes through the system. The genitive form bländarens is used in Swedish to indicate belonging or relation to the aperture, for example bländarens storlek (the aperture’s size) or bländarens funktion (the aperture’s function). The term is not a separate concept beyond the aperture itself, but a grammatical form used in descriptive text.

In photography, the bländare determines exposure and depth of field. A larger opening (lower f-number, such as f/2.8) lets more light reach the sensor or film and yields a shallower depth of field, while a smaller opening (higher f-number, such as f/16) reduces light but increases depth of field. The f-number is a standard way to express bländarens size and is a key parameter alongside shutter speed and ISO in exposure calculations.

Mechanically, a bländare consists of a diaphragm made of blades that form a variable opening.
