RNA is transferred from an electrophoresis gel to a membrane, and then hybridized with a labeled complementary nucleic acid probe. This technique is valuable for studying gene expression levels by examining the abundance of specific messenger RNA (mRNA) transcripts.

Western blotting, also known as immunoblotting, is employed for the detection and analysis of specific proteins. Proteins separated by gel electrophoresis are transferred to a membrane, typically made of nitrocellulose or PVDF. The membrane is then incubated with antibodies that are specific to the target protein. A secondary antibody, conjugated to an enzyme or fluorescent tag, is used to detect the primary antibody binding, thereby revealing the presence and quantity of the protein of interest. These blotting techniques are indispensable tools in molecular biology, genetics, and immunology research.
