Bloddonation, or blood donation, is the voluntary act of giving blood for use in medical care. Donated blood is used for transfusions, surgical procedures, treating injuries, and in some cases for research. Donations can yield whole blood or blood components such as plasma and platelets, often obtained by apheresis.

Process and safety: Donors undergo a health screening and a brief physical assessment to protect both donor and recipient. The collection of whole blood generally takes about 8–10 minutes, with total time at the collection site around an hour. Afterward, donors are advised to rest briefly and drink fluids; avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day. Eligibility depends on country and type of donation but typically requires being in good health, at least 17 or 18 years old, and meeting minimum weight. Certain conditions or recent procedures can temporarily or permanently defer donation.

Safety measures include sterile, single-use equipment and screening of donated blood for infectious diseases. Donor safety is also prioritized; adverse effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as bruising or lightheadedness.

Storage and use: Collected whole blood is refrigerated and can be separated into components. Red cells are typically stored for up to 42 days; plasma can be frozen for up to a year; platelets may be kept only a few days. Blood types and crossmatching are used to ensure compatibility.

Frequency and impact: In many systems, whole-blood donation is permitted every 8 weeks for men and 12 weeks for women, subject to local rules. Regular donations help maintain an adequate blood supply for emergencies and routine care.
