Blockgauge is an open-source analytics framework designed to measure and visualize block-level characteristics across blockchain networks. It collects and harmonizes metrics such as block size, block time, transaction count, gas usage, fees, and block propagation delays, with the aim of helping operators, researchers, and developers assess network health, capacity, and the impact of protocol changes.

The project originated as a community effort to standardize telemetry around blocks and propagate metrics across diverse chains. It supports multiple blockchains, including both UTXO- and account-based models, by providing adapters that ingest data from node operators, mining pools, and public explorers. The goal is to enable cross-chain comparisons while preserving a consistent data model for analysis.

Blockgauge’s architecture is modular and decoupled. It typically comprises data collectors, a message bus or stream processor, a time-series database, an analysis layer, an API server, and a web-based visualization UI. The data model centers on block-centric records with fields such as height, hash, timestamp, size, transaction count, gas usage, gas price, propagation delay, and reorg depth when available. The system supports customizable dashboards, historical queries, and programmatic access for external tools.

Key features include real-time dashboards, historical analytics, anomaly detection, alerting rules, and API access. Privacy controls are often incorporated to scrub or de-identify sensitive identifiers. Blockgauge is used for network health monitoring, capacity planning, and academic research, aiding operators and researchers in understanding propagation patterns and the effects of protocol updates.
