Bistabiili refers to a system or electronic circuit that can exist in one of two stable states. The term "bistable" comes from the Latin "bis" meaning twice and "stare" meaning to stand. These two stable states are mutually exclusive, meaning the system can only be in one state at a time. To transition from one state to another, an external trigger or input is required. Once the trigger is removed, the system remains in its new state until another trigger is applied.

A classic example of a bistable device is the flip-flop, a fundamental building block in digital electronics. Flip-flops are used in memory cells, counters, and shift registers. They can store a single bit of information, representing either a logical 0 or a logical 1. The two stable states correspond to these binary values. The transition between states is typically controlled by clock signals or data inputs. Other bistable systems exist in various fields, including mechanical latches and certain biological processes. The key characteristic remains the ability to maintain one of two distinct, stable configurations without continuous external energy input, only requiring energy for state changes.
