This interdisciplinary area draws upon principles from biology, chemistry, genetics, engineering, and computer science to address challenges in various sectors.

One of the most prominent applications of biotechnology is in medicine. Genetic engineering allows for the development of new drugs, vaccines, and diagnostic tools. For instance, recombinant DNA technology has revolutionized the production of insulin and growth hormones. Gene therapy aims to treat genetic diseases by altering a patient's genes.

In agriculture, biotechnology has led to the development of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that are resistant to pests, diseases, or herbicides, or that have enhanced nutritional content. This has the potential to increase crop yields and reduce the need for chemical pesticides. Biotechnology also plays a role in animal breeding and health.

The industrial sector utilizes biotechnology for processes such as the production of biofuels, enzymes, and biodegradable plastics. Fermentation, an ancient biotechnological process, is still crucial for producing alcoholic beverages, yogurt, and many other food products.
