Bioremediácii is a biological process that uses naturally occurring or deliberately introduced microorganisms or other biological agents to remove or neutralize pollutants from a contaminated site. This approach leverages the metabolic capabilities of these organisms to break down, transform, or immobilize hazardous substances into less toxic or inert forms.

The effectiveness of bioremediácii depends on several factors, including the type of contaminant, the environmental conditions at the site (such as temperature, pH, oxygen levels, and nutrient availability), and the presence of suitable microbial communities. Common targets for bioremediácii include petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, chlorinated solvents, and heavy metals.

There are two main types of bioremediácii: in situ and ex situ. In situ bioremediácii is performed directly at the contaminated site, minimizing disturbance. This can involve enhancing the activity of native microorganisms by adding nutrients or electron acceptors (biostimulation) or introducing specialized microorganisms (bioaugmentation). Ex situ bioremediácii involves excavating the contaminated material and treating it elsewhere, such as in bioreactors or landfarming systems.

Bioremediácii is often considered a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional remediation methods like incineration or landfilling. However, it can be slower than other methods and its success is highly site-specific, requiring careful assessment and monitoring.
