Biopuhastus, often translated as biological purification or bioremediation, refers to the use of living organisms, primarily microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, to degrade or neutralize environmental contaminants. This process leverages the natural metabolic capabilities of these organisms to break down pollutants into less harmful substances. Biopuhastus is a versatile technology employed in various environmental applications, including wastewater treatment, soil remediation, and air pollution control.

In wastewater treatment, biopuhastus is a cornerstone of many municipal and industrial systems. Microorganisms are introduced into tanks or reactors where they consume organic matter, nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, and even certain toxic chemicals present in the wastewater. Aerobic processes, which require oxygen, and anaerobic processes, which occur in the absence of oxygen, are the two primary biological treatment methods. Both aim to reduce the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the water before it is discharged.

For soil and groundwater remediation, biopuhastus, also known as bioremediation, can be applied in situ (directly at the contaminated site) or ex situ (by excavating the contaminated material and treating it elsewhere). Microbes can be stimulated to enhance their activity by adding nutrients or oxygen (biostimulation), or specific microbial strains known to degrade particular contaminants can be introduced (bioaugmentation). This approach is particularly effective for oil spills, pesticide contamination, and industrial chemical spills. The effectiveness of biopuhastus depends on factors such as the type and concentration of the contaminant, the availability of suitable microorganisms, and environmental conditions like temperature, pH, and moisture.
