Biomkraftverk, often translated as biomass power plants, are facilities that generate electricity or heat by burning organic materials. These materials, known as biomass, can include a wide range of renewable resources such as wood chips, agricultural waste, energy crops, and even organic components of municipal solid waste. The fundamental principle behind a biomkraftverk is the conversion of the chemical energy stored in biomass into thermal energy through combustion. This heat is then used to produce steam, which drives turbines connected to generators, thereby producing electricity. In some cases, the heat can also be used directly for district heating systems.

The process typically involves several stages. First, the biomass fuel is collected, processed, and transported to the power plant. At the plant, it is fed into a combustion chamber where it is burned at high temperatures. The resulting hot gases are then used to heat water, creating high-pressure steam. This steam expands through a turbine, causing it to rotate. The rotating turbine is coupled to an electric generator, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. After passing through the turbine, the steam is condensed back into water and recirculated. Emissions from the combustion process are treated to remove pollutants before being released into the atmosphere, and the remaining ash can often be used as fertilizer. Biomkraftverk are considered a renewable energy source because the organic materials used can be regrown or replenished.
