Biometan is a renewable energy source produced from organic matter. It is essentially purified biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide, which is then upgraded to remove impurities. This process increases the methane concentration to over 95%, making it comparable to natural gas. Biometan can be produced from various sources, including agricultural waste, animal manure, sewage sludge, and food processing residues. The production typically involves anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down organic material in the absence of oxygen.

The upgraded biometan can be injected into the existing natural gas grid, used as a vehicle fuel (bio-LNG or bio-CNG), or utilized in industrial processes. Its use contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by displacing fossil fuels and by managing organic waste streams that would otherwise decompose and release methane into the atmosphere.
