Binary forms, or binäärimuodot in Finnish, refer to a type of musical composition that is structured into two main, distinct sections. These sections are typically referred to as A and B. Each section is usually repeated before moving to the next, creating a pattern like AABB. This structure is one of the simplest and most fundamental forms in music.

The binary form is characterized by its clear division. Section A often presents a melodic or harmonic idea, and section B typically develops or contrasts with the material presented in A. The relationship between the two sections can vary; they might be closely related, differing only slightly in melody or rhythm, or they could be quite contrasting. The repetition of each section (AABB) is a common feature, reinforcing the musical ideas and providing a sense of balance and completeness.

Historically, binary form was prevalent in Baroque music, particularly in dance movements of suites. For instance, many preludes, allemandes, courantes, and sarabandes from this era employ a binary structure. As musical forms evolved, binary form also saw variations and transitions into more complex structures like rounded binary form, where a fragment of the first section returns at the end of the second. Despite the development of more intricate forms, the basic binary structure remains a foundational concept in music theory and composition.
