Binokulare is the German term for binoculars, a handheld optical instrument that uses two parallel telescopes mounted side by side to provide a simultaneous, magnified view with both eyes. Binokulare are used across activities such as birdwatching, astronomy, marine navigation, hiking, and surveillance, offering depth perception and a wider field of view compared to a single telescope.

Each side of a binokulare contains an objective lens, a prism assembly to correct image orientation, and an eyepiece for magnification. The two optical tubes are coupled so they focus together and keep the overall image aligned. Common prism designs are Porro and roof prisms, which influence the instrument’s size, weight, and light transmission. Most models include a central focusing mechanism that adjusts both tubes at once, plus a diopter adjustment on one eyepiece to compensate for individual vision differences.

Performance is described by magnification (for example, 8x) and the objective diameter (for example, 42 mm). Higher magnification makes distant objects appear larger but can reduce brightness and the field of view. Lens coatings improve light transmission; terms such as coated, multi-coated, or fully multi-coated indicate increasing levels of light control. Other metrics include exit pupil, which relates to the eye’s pupil size in low light, field of view, and close focus distance.

Variants range from compact, lightweight roof-prism models to bulkier Porro-prism designs, each with trade-offs in housing profile and depth perception. Modern binokulare may be waterproof and fog-proof through gas purging, offer rubber armor for rugged use, include image stabilization, or provide diopter and interpupillary adjustments for precise alignment.

Historically, binokulare evolved in the 19th and 20th centuries with advances in prism and lens technology, and are produced by numerous manufacturers worldwide. The term Binokulare remains common in German-speaking contexts to denote binoculars.
