Binaarimuodossa refers to data or information represented using the binary numeral system. This system, also known as base-2, uses only two distinct symbols, typically 0 and 1. These digits, called bits, are the fundamental units of information in computing and digital communications.

In a binary system, each digit's position represents a power of two. For example, the binary number 1011 can be converted to decimal as follows: (1 * 2^3) + (0 * 2^2) + (1 * 2^1) + (1 * 2^0) = 8 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 11. This is in contrast to the decimal system (base-10), which uses ten digits (0-9) and powers of ten.

Computers utilize binary because electronic circuits can easily represent two states: on or off, high voltage or low voltage, which correspond directly to the binary digits 1 and 0. All data processed by digital devices, from text and images to programs and instructions, is ultimately stored and manipulated in binary form. This representation is crucial for the functioning of all modern technology.
