Biljoonaa is the Finnish word for one trillion. In the short scale system, commonly used in English-speaking countries and increasingly in many other parts of the world, a trillion is represented as 1 followed by 12 zeros, or 10^12. This corresponds to the number 1,000,000,000,000.

Historically, some European countries, including Finland, used the long scale system. In the long scale, a trillion was a million million millions, or 10^18. However, Finland officially adopted the short scale for its numerical system in 1991. Therefore, when encountering "biljoonaa" in contemporary Finnish contexts, it refers to the short scale trillion.

The concept of a biljoona is a very large number, often used in discussions of economics, national debt, or astronomical distances. For example, if a country's national debt were measured in euros and reached one biljoonaa euros, it would represent a significant financial burden. Similarly, in astrophysics, distances are often expressed in trillions of kilometers or light-years.
