Bildesignaler is a term used in German-speaking contexts to describe signals that carry visual information. In imaging systems, bildesignaler may refer to both analog and digital streams that encode image data, such as video signals or digital image data streams. They originate in devices such as cameras, scanners, or displays and are processed to form viewable images or for further analysis.

A typical imaging chain begins with an image sensor (CCD or CMOS) that converts incident light into electric charges. The resulting analog signal is amplified and then digitized by an analog-to-digital converter, producing a digital image signal. For color sensors, a color filter array and demosaicing are used to create full-color image data. The digital image signal is then processed by an image signal processor (ISP), performing white balance, exposure control, noise reduction, gamma correction, and compression as needed. The processed data can be stored, transmitted, or displayed. In displays, bildesignaler are converted into the visual output seen on screens.

Historically, analog video signals (such as PAL, NTSC, or SECAM) represented image information, while modern systems predominantly use digital image data streams. The term is not strictly standardized and can refer to raw sensor data, intermediate processing signals, or finalized image data intended for display or analysis.
