Bijektivita is a fundamental concept in mathematics, specifically within set theory and abstract algebra. A function f mapping elements from a set A to a set B is said to be bijective if it is both injective (one-to-one) and surjective (onto).

Injectivity means that for any two distinct elements x and y in set A, their images under the function f are also distinct in set B. In other words, no two different inputs produce the same output. Formally, if f(x) = f(y), then x must equal y.

Surjectivity means that every element in the codomain (set B) is the image of at least one element in the domain (set A). There are no "unmapped" elements in the codomain. For every element z in B, there exists at least one element x in A such that f(x) = z.

When a function is bijective, it establishes a perfect pairing between the elements of its domain and codomain. This implies that the two sets have the same cardinality, meaning they have the same "number" of elements, even if they are infinite. Bijective functions are crucial for defining isomorphisms, which are structure-preserving maps between mathematical objects, and for establishing equivalence relations. They also play a key role in the study of permutations and the construction of inverse functions.
