Betonipöly, also known as concrete dust, is a fine particulate matter generated from the cutting, grinding, drilling, or demolition of concrete. It consists primarily of silica and cementitious materials. Exposure to betonipöly can pose significant health risks, particularly respiratory issues.

The primary health concern associated with betonipöly inhalation is silicosis, a serious and irreversible lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica. Prolonged or repeated exposure to silica dust can lead to inflammation and scarring of lung tissue, resulting in symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. In severe cases, silicosis can be fatal. Other respiratory problems, including bronchitis and emphysema, can also be aggravated by or caused by exposure.

Workers in construction, renovation, and demolition industries are at the highest risk of exposure to betonipöly. Measures to control dust are therefore crucial in these environments. These include using wet cutting methods, employing local exhaust ventilation systems, and wearing appropriate respiratory protective equipment, such as N95 respirators or higher-rated masks. Proper housekeeping and regular cleaning of work areas also help minimize airborne dust levels. Regulatory bodies in many countries have established occupational exposure limits for silica dust to protect worker health.
