Betanaphthols, also known as 2-naphthol or beta-naphthol, are an organic compound with the chemical formula C10H7OH. It is one of two isomers of naphthol, the other being alpha-naphthol. Betanaphthol is a white or slightly colored crystalline solid. It is sparingly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents like ethanol, ether, and benzene. Its molecular structure consists of a naphthalene ring system with a hydroxyl group attached at the beta position (carbon number 2).

Betanaphthol is primarily produced from naphthalene through a multi-step process involving sulfonation and subsequent alkali fusion. It serves as an important intermediate in the synthesis of various organic compounds. Its most significant applications are in the production of dyes and pigments, particularly azo dyes. It is also used in the manufacture of antioxidants, pharmaceuticals, and fragrances. In some applications, it can act as a chemical intermediate for further functionalization.
