The beta-adrenergic receptor, often abbreviated as beta receptor or beta-AR, is a type of G protein-coupled receptor that is activated by the catecholamines, particularly epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline). These receptors are found on the surface of cells in various tissues throughout the body, including the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain.

There are three main subtypes of beta-adrenergic receptors: beta-1 (β1), beta-2 (β2), and beta-3 (β3). Each subtype has a slightly different distribution and function. β1 receptors are predominantly found in the heart, where their activation increases heart rate and contractility. β2 receptors are mainly located in the smooth muscle of the airways, blood vessels, and uterus, where their activation leads to relaxation. β3 receptors are primarily found in adipose tissue and are involved in lipolysis and thermogenesis.

The activation of beta-adrenergic receptors plays a crucial role in the body's "fight-or-flight" response, mediating many of the physiological changes that occur during stress or excitement. For example, increased heart rate, bronchodilation (widening of airways), and increased blood flow to muscles are all effects mediated by beta-AR activation.

Drugs that target beta-adrenergic receptors are widely used in medicine. Beta-blockers, for instance, inhibit the action of beta-ARs and are prescribed for conditions such as hypertension, angina, and heart failure. Conversely, beta-agonists, which mimic the action of catecholamines at beta-ARs, are used to treat conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
