Benmärgsinsamling, also known as bone marrow aspiration, is a medical procedure used to obtain a sample of bone marrow. This sample is typically taken from the iliac crest, which is the large, flat bone at the back of the pelvis. In some cases, the sternum or tibia may also be used, particularly in children. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or conscious sedation to minimize discomfort.

Aspiration involves inserting a special needle into the bone marrow cavity and drawing out a small amount of liquid marrow using a syringe. This liquid sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory tests can help diagnose various conditions affecting the blood and bone marrow, such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes. It can also be used to assess the effectiveness of cancer treatments or to find the cause of unexplained anemia or low blood cell counts.

In some instances, a bone marrow biopsy may also be performed immediately after the aspiration. This involves using a different needle to extract a small, solid core of bone marrow tissue. Both aspiration and biopsy provide complementary information. The procedure is generally safe, with potential risks including minor bleeding, bruising, or infection at the needle insertion site.
