Benetzende is a term used in surface science and materials technology to describe substances or properties that promote the spreading of a liquid on a solid surface. Often translated as wetting agent or surfactant, benetzende action aims to reduce the contact angle between the liquid and the solid, leading to improved surface coverage.

The effectiveness of benetzung is typically assessed by contact angle measurements, surface tension, and the related concept of surface free energy. A lower contact angle and higher wettability indicate stronger benetzung. Wetting behavior depends on the interaction between the liquid, the solid, and the interfacial environment; on hydrophobic surfaces, wetting is inherently harder and relies more on benetzende additives to overcome interfacial barriers.

Benetzende agents include a range of substances such as surfactants (anionic, nonionic, cationic), cosolvents, and low-surface-tension liquids. Surface modifiers like silanes or polymeric wetting agents can provide longer-lasting or substrate-specific wetting. Fluorinated compounds may offer very low surface energies for specialized applications.

Applications of benetzende agents are broad. In agriculture, adjuvants reduce surface tension to improve spray deposition on plant leaves. In paints, coatings, and inks, benetzende additives promote uniform film formation. In cleaning formulations and textiles, they enhance spreading and penetration of liquids. Selection of a benetzendesmittel depends on the substrate, operating conditions (temperature, pH), and environmental or safety considerations, as excessive wetting can cause runoff, foaming, or contamination risks.
