beginpositie

Beginpositie is a term used in Dutch to describe the starting configuration of a game or task, i.e., the fixed arrangement of elements before any moves or actions have been made. In chess, the beginpositie refers to the standard initial setup on the board. White pieces occupy the first and second ranks on the bottom, Black pieces occupy the seventh and eighth ranks on the top.

From White's left to right on the back rank: rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook. White pawns fill the second rank; Black pawns fill the seventh. The queen stands on the d-file and on the square matching her color (white queen on d1, black queen on d8). The initial position determines the opening phase and constrains possible moves, development, and castling rights.

Chess variants may use different beginpos. The best known exception is Chess960 (Fischer Random), where the back-rank arrangement of major and minor pieces is randomized while the pawn structure remains the same; castling rules are adapted accordingly. Other games have their own standardized starting configurations, and in puzzle design the term can describe a fixed starting state.

In Dutch usage, beginpositie can also refer to the starting state in other games or problems, or, more generally, the initial setup from which strategic steps unfold. It denotes the baseline from which analysis proceeds.
