By interfering with the enzymes responsible for cross-linking peptidoglycans, the building blocks of the bacterial cell wall, these antibiotics weaken the cell wall, leading to bacterial lysis and death.

This group encompasses several well-known subgroups, including penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams. Each subgroup has variations in their structure that affect their spectrum of activity, pharmacokinetic properties, and resistance to bacterial enzymes.
