A beckoning is a gesture or signal, typically made with the hand or head, intended to attract someone's attention or to invite them to come closer. This non-verbal communication can vary significantly across cultures and contexts. The most common beckoning gesture involves moving the fingers towards oneself with the palm facing down.

In some cultures, however, this same gesture might be considered rude or dismissive. For instance, in parts of Asia and some other regions, beckoning with the palm facing upwards and fingers moving towards oneself is the preferred or more polite way to signal someone to approach. Conversely, the gesture commonly used in Western cultures to call someone might be perceived as disrespectful or even offensive in other parts of the world.

Beyond physical gestures, the term "beckoning" can also be used metaphorically to describe an intangible call or invitation. This could refer to an alluring prospect, a strong desire, or a sense of destiny that draws a person towards a particular path or experience. For example, one might speak of the beckonings of adventure or the beckonings of a new career. In this figurative sense, it implies a powerful, often subconscious, pull towards something.
