Battlestar is a term used in science fiction to describe a large, space-faring warship that functions as a fleet's capital ship and command center. In many works of space opera, battlestars are designed to project power over long distances, support fleet operations, and serve as mobile bases for smaller combat craft and crew.

The term was popularized by the 1978 television series Battlestar Galactica, created by Glen A. Larson. In the series, battlestars form the backbone of the Colonial Fleet defending the Twelve Colonies from the Cylon threat. The flagship of the Colonial Fleet is a battlestar, a formidable, self-sufficient warship essential to sustaining prolonged campaigns.

In the 2004 reimagined series Battlestar Galactica, the concept is retained but with updated visuals and a grittier tone. Galactica remains the lead battlestar of the Colonial Fleet, emphasizing resilience, strategic mobility, and duty in the fleet's long refuge mission.

Beyond Battlestar Galactica, battlestar-like ships appear in other works of science fiction and have become a generic trope for large carrier-capable warships in space opera. The term has entered popular culture as a shorthand for a capital warship capable of independent operation and fleet command, even when not tied to a specific franchise.
