Batteryaware is a term used to describe the design and operation of systems that are aware of the state and health of their energy storage, primarily electrical batteries, in order to optimize performance, longevity, and reliability. The concept is applied across devices such as smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, and Internet of Things sensors, as well as in larger energy systems and data centers that rely on battery backup or storage.

Key features include real-time monitoring of state of charge, state of health, temperature, impedance, and cycle count; predictive models to anticipate end of life or temperature excursions; and adaptive power management strategies that adjust processing, wireless activity, or charging based on battery state.

Batteryaware implementations typically involve a combination of hardware sensors, battery management software, and firmware that can enforce charging profiles, throttle performance to stay within safe temperature and state-of-health ranges, and schedule tasks to balance energy use. Standards and interoperability efforts seek to harmonize data formats and APIs across vendors.

Benefits include extended battery life, reduced risk of sudden shutdowns, more efficient charging, and improved user experience. However, challenges remain, such as accounting for diversity of chemistries, aging, measurement noise, calibration drift, and the overhead of monitoring itself.
