The bastard turtle, known scientifically as Meiolania platyceps, is an extinct species of turtle that once inhabited Lord Howe Island and the surrounding Norfolk and Philip Islands. This large, herbivorous turtle is notable for its unique morphology, particularly the presence of horn-like projections on its head and a spiked tail, giving it a somewhat formidable appearance. These features are thought to have served a defensive purpose against predators, though the extent of its natural threats on the islands is debated.

Meiolania platyceps was a terrestrial species, measuring up to 2.5 meters in length. Fossil evidence suggests it was an important part of the island's ecosystem. The demise of the bastard turtle is strongly linked to the arrival of humans around 10,000 years ago. Overhunting by early human settlers and habitat alteration are considered the primary factors leading to its extinction. Archaeological findings, including turtle shells and bones, provide evidence of human interaction and consumption. The species is now known solely from fossil remains.
