basisparameter is a term used in mathematics and related fields to denote a parameter that selects or specifies a basis for a vector space or function space. A basis is a set of vectors that spans the space, and the basis parameter identifies which particular set of vectors is used to represent elements of the space. The parameter can be a finite collection of vectors, a matrix built from those vectors, or a functional description that generates the basis.

In linear algebra, a basis B = {b1,...,bn} for R^n (or a vector space V) defines a coordinate system. The matrix B with columns b1,...,bn encodes the basis parameter. Any vector x in the space can be represented in the basis B by the coordinate vector [x]_B, with x = B [x]_B. If B is invertible, then [x]_B = B^{-1} x. When the basis depends on a parameter t, written B(t) or basis parameter function, one obtains a family of representations that varies smoothly or discretely with t.

Basisparameters arise in applications such as coordinate transformations, spectral representations, and feature extraction. Common bases include the standard basis, Fourier basis, wavelet basis, and principal components. The choice of basis (i.e., the basis parameter) affects sparsity of representations, numerical conditioning, and interpretability of coefficients.

Computationally, changing the basis requires transforming coordinates via the basis matrix. For an orthonormal basis, the transformation simplifies to [x]_B = B^T x, and x = B [x]_B. For non-orthonormal bases, pseudoinverse methods or QR decompositions may be used. If the basis parameter is continuous, differentiating x with respect to the parameter can track how coordinates change, a concept used in parametric modeling and optimization.
