Ballasttanksystemen are integral components of ships and submarines, designed to control buoyancy and stability. They are a series of tanks that can be selectively filled with water or emptied, altering the overall weight and displacement of the vessel. For ships, ballast systems are crucial for maintaining stability, especially when carrying light cargo or in rough seas. By filling ballast tanks with water, the ship's center of gravity is lowered, increasing its resistance to rolling. Conversely, emptying the tanks can be necessary to increase freeboard or prepare for lighter operational loads.

Submarines rely heavily on ballast tanks for their primary function: submerging and resurfacing. These tanks are typically divided into main ballast tanks (MBTs) and trim tanks. MBTs are large tanks that, when flooded with water, provide the negative buoyancy needed for the submarine to dive. To surface, compressed air is blown into the MBTs, forcing the water out and creating positive buoyancy. Trim tanks are smaller and are used to fine-tune the submarine's pitch and balance in the water, ensuring a level attitude during submersion or while operating at periscope depth.
