Ballastoitu is a Finnish term that translates to "ballasted" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of railway infrastructure, specifically referring to the layer of crushed stone or gravel that supports railway tracks. This ballasted trackbed serves several critical functions.

Firstly, it distributes the load from the train's wheels and the tracks to the underlying ground. This prevents the soil from deforming under pressure, which could otherwise lead to track instability. Secondly, the ballast provides good drainage for rainwater, preventing water from accumulating under the tracks and weakening the subgrade. Waterlogging can cause frost heave in cold climates and soil erosion, both of which can severely damage the track. Thirdly, the loose nature of the ballast allows for some movement and adjustment of the track, which can accommodate minor ground settlement and vibrations from passing trains. This flexibility helps to maintain track geometry and ride quality.

The process of installing and maintaining ballast is known as ballasting. It involves laying down the stone aggregate, ensuring proper compaction, and periodically undertaking maintenance tasks such as tamping, which re-compacts the ballast and restores the track's level. While traditional ballasted tracks are widely used, alternative track systems like slab tracks, which use a concrete base, are also employed in some situations, particularly in tunnels or on bridges where drainage and maintenance access are more challenging. The choice between ballasted and non-ballasted tracks depends on various factors including cost, environmental conditions, expected traffic volume, and maintenance considerations.
