Bakkeplanter, also known as terrariums, are miniature self-sustaining ecosystems enclosed in glass containers. They are typically created using plants that thrive in humid environments, such as mosses, ferns, and small tropical species. The enclosed nature of a bakkeplanter allows water to evaporate from the soil and plants, condense on the glass, and then trickle back down, creating a closed-loop water cycle. This process means that bakkeplanters require very little watering once established.

The concept of bakkeplanter dates back to the mid-19th century when botanist Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward accidentally discovered that a sealed bottle could preserve a plant. This led to the development of Wardian cases, which were instrumental in transporting plants across long distances and the study of plant life in different climates. Today, bakkeplanter are popular as decorative items and as a way to bring a touch of nature indoors, requiring minimal maintenance.

When creating a bakkeplanter, a layer of gravel or pebbles is usually placed at the bottom for drainage, followed by activated charcoal to filter impurities and prevent odors. A layer of soil suitable for the chosen plants is then added, and the plants are carefully arranged. For open terrariums, which do not have a lid and are suitable for succulents and cacti, a more porous soil mix is used, and they require occasional watering. Closed bakkeplanter are best for humidity-loving plants and need only infrequent misting.
