Backsensorer, also known as parking sensors or reverse sensors, are electronic devices designed to assist drivers in parking and maneuvering in tight spaces. They typically consist of small ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensors embedded in the front and/or rear bumpers of a vehicle. When an obstacle is detected within a certain range, the sensors emit a series of audible beeps or a visual display on the dashboard, indicating the proximity of the object.

The principle of operation for ultrasonic sensors involves emitting high-frequency sound waves that bounce off nearby objects. The time it takes for the sound waves to return to the sensor is measured to calculate the distance. Electromagnetic sensors, on the other hand, create a field around the bumper, and the presence of an object disrupts this field, which is then detected.

Backsensorer can significantly reduce the risk of minor collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, walls, or other obstacles during parking. They are particularly useful for drivers who have difficulty judging distances or visibility when reversing. Many modern vehicles come equipped with backsensorer as standard or as an optional feature, and aftermarket kits are also available for installation on older cars. The sensitivity and range of these sensors can vary depending on the manufacturer and model.
