The backpass rule, also known as the indirect free kick rule, is a regulation in the sport of association football (soccer) that governs how a goalkeeper can handle the ball. It was introduced to prevent time-wasting and to encourage more attacking play.

Under the backpass rule, if a player deliberately passes the ball back to their own goalkeeper with their foot, the goalkeeper is not allowed to pick up the ball with their hands. They must play the ball with their feet. If the goalkeeper does pick up the ball with their hands after a deliberate backpass, an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team at the spot where the goalkeeper handled the ball.

The rule applies only to deliberate passes with the foot. A goalkeeper can still pick up a ball that is passed to them with their head, chest, or knee, or if the ball rebounds off an opponent. It also does not apply if the ball is passed back by a teammate using their hands. The intention behind the rule is to prevent a team from using their goalkeeper as an extra defender to shield the ball and run down the clock without any attempt to advance the play. The backpass rule has had a significant impact on the tactical approaches in football, forcing teams to be more creative in their build-up play and less reliant on simply passing back to their goalkeeper.
