Bélfüggészt refers to the medical condition also known as intestinal adhesion. It occurs when fibrous bands of scar tissue form between organs within the abdominal cavity. These adhesions can connect loops of intestine to each other, to the abdominal wall, or to other pelvic organs. The formation of adhesions is a common consequence of abdominal surgery, particularly involving the intestines, but can also develop due to inflammation from infections like appendicitis or diverticulitis, or from conditions such as endometriosis.

In many cases, bélfüggészt does not cause any symptoms and is discovered incidentally during surgery or imaging tests for other reasons. However, when symptoms do occur, they can range from mild discomfort to severe pain. The primary complication associated with bélfüggészt is intestinal obstruction. This happens when the adhesions constrict the intestine, preventing the normal passage of food and waste. Symptoms of obstruction include severe abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and an inability to pass gas or stool. In some instances, adhesions can also lead to infertility, particularly in women. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of physical examination, patient history, and imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasounds. Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and may involve dietary changes, medication to relieve symptoms, or surgical intervention to release the adhesions, a procedure known as adhesiolysis.
