An axonometer is a type of technical drawing that represents a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional surface. Unlike orthographic projections, which show multiple views of an object, or perspective projections, which aim for photorealism, axonometric drawings present a single view where the object's parallel lines remain parallel and do not converge. This characteristic preserves the relative proportions of the object along its axes.

There are three main types of axonometric projections: isometric, dimetric, and trimetric. In isometric projection, all three axes are equally foreshortened, and the angles between them are equal. This results in a balanced and commonly used view. Dimetric projection involves foreshortening two axes equally, while the third axis is foreshortened differently. Trimetric projection is the most general form, where all three axes are foreshortened by different amounts and the angles between them vary.

Axonometric drawings are valuable in various fields, including engineering, architecture, and design, because they provide a clear and easy-to-understand representation of an object's form and spatial relationships without the complexity of perspective drawing. They are often used in technical manuals, product illustrations, and conceptual sketches to convey information efficiently.
