avrensning

Avrensning is a term used in Norwegian, Danish and Swedish to denote the process of removing impurities from a substance or system, i.e., purification or cleansing. It is applied across disciplines to describe improvement of quality by eliminating undesired components.

The word derives from av- meaning away and rensning meaning cleansing, reflecting the idea of removing contaminants or impurities from a material or system.

In environmental engineering and related fields, avrensning refers to processes that reduce contaminants in water or air to meet safety standards. Typical methods include coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection for water, and filtration, adsorption or scrubbing for air purification. For more challenging streams, membrane processes such as reverse osmosis may be employed.
