In a typical autokatalytic reaction, a product molecule is one of the reactants that is involved in the catalytic step. The general form of an autokatalytic reaction can be represented as A + B → 2B, where A is the reactant and B is the product that also acts as a catalyst. Initially, the reaction rate is slow because there is little of the catalyst B present. However, as more B is formed, the catalytic effect becomes stronger, and the reaction rate accelerates. This shape arises from the initial slow phase, followed by a period of rapid acceleration, and finally a deceleration as reactants are consumed.
