The Autobahn is a national highway system in Germany. The term "Autobahn" is German for "automobile road." Construction began in 1929, and the first section was opened in 1932. Initially, it was not designed with speed limits in mind, and this is a characteristic that is still widely associated with the Autobahn today. While many sections have speed limits, approximately half of the Autobahn network does not have a legally mandated maximum speed, though a recommended speed limit of 130 kilometers per hour (81 mph) is posted.
The Autobahn is known for its high-quality construction and often features multiple lanes in each direction.
