The term blends autocrine and paracrine concepts to emphasize this combined action within a shared microenvironment.

Mechanistically, the same ligand influences receptors on the same cell and on adjacent cells. Local concentration, diffusion, receptor density, and degradation rates shape the balance between autocrine and paracrine effects.
