Austavast is a coastal municipality and cultural region in the fictional country of Nordmark. It lies on the eastern shore of the Nord Sea, around a sheltered harbor that has historically served as a trading hub. The region includes a main peninsula and several smaller islets connected by bridges.

The name Austavast is of uncertain origin. Some scholars link it to Old Norse elements referring to the east coast, while others suggest a preexisting Austavast root meaning “shore settlement.”

The geography includes a mix of low hills, rocky coast, and tidal flats. The area experiences an average annual temperature of about 8–10 C and rainfall throughout the year. Local ecosystems include kelp forests and migratory seabird colonies.

Historically, human activity dates to the late Bronze Age, with a major medieval harbor that expanded during the Nordic trading era. It joined the Nordmark federation in the early modern period and gained limited self-government in the late 20th century.

Austavast operates as an autonomous municipality within Nordmark, with a municipal council elected every four years and a prefect appointed by the regional government. Responsibilities include local planning, fisheries management, and cultural programs.

The economy centers on fishing and seafood processing, maritime services, and tourism. Renewable energy projects, notably offshore wind and tidal power, contribute to the regional grid.

The population is around 60,000. Most residents speak Nordmarkian, with a local Austavasti dialect. Cultural life centers on maritime heritage, with festivals, seafood-focused cuisine, and a tradition of small-boat sailing.

Notable landmarks include the Austavast Lighthouse, Old Havn, and the Maritime Museum.
