Ausformen is a German term used in engineering, manufacturing, and crafts to describe the process of removing a molded part from its mold after the material has set or cured. The word can refer to the act of demolding as well as to the broader forming operation that yields the final outer shape of a component.

The term is common in plastics, rubber, metal casting, ceramic slip casting, concrete elements, and composite manufacturing. In injection molding and casting, ausformen follows the curing or solidification step. The process may involve manual tools or automated equipment to separate the part from the mold without damage. Release agents, mold coatings, and properly designed draft angles aid in facilitating ausformen.

Key considerations include material properties such as shrinkage and flexibility, mold design, process temperatures, cure times, and the risk of damage like tearing, deformation, or sticking during demolding. The timing of demolding is critical: demolding too early can cause distortion; demolding too late can complicate removal or affect surface quality. After ausformen, parts often undergo finishing, trimming, or post-processing to achieve final tolerances and surface conditions.

Variations of ausformen appear across industries. In high-volume production, automated demolding is common, while in artisanal or small-batch contexts ausformen may be performed manually. In sculpture and ceramics, ausformen also denotes the removal of the finished piece from its mold, followed by further refinement.
