Auringonpurkauksia, or solar flares, are sudden, intense bursts of radiation emanating from the Sun. They are caused by the rapid release of magnetic energy stored in the Sun's atmosphere, specifically in areas known as active regions, which are often associated with sunspots. When magnetic field lines in the Sun's corona become tangled, stressed, and then suddenly reconfigure, they release a tremendous amount of energy. This energy is emitted in the form of electromagnetic radiation across the entire spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays, and also accelerates charged particles like electrons, protons, and heavier ions.

The intensity of solar flares is classified using a letter system: A, B, C, M, and X, with X-class flares being the most powerful. Each class is ten times more energetic than the one preceding it. Flares can vary greatly in size and duration, from small events lasting only a few minutes to enormous ones that can span hours.

While solar flares themselves are primarily a radiation hazard, their effects can be far-reaching. The radiation from a flare can reach Earth in about eight minutes. Intense flares can disrupt radio communications, particularly high-frequency radio waves. They can also pose risks to astronauts in space and to passengers and crew on high-altitude aircraft. Furthermore, solar flares are often associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are massive expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona. When CMEs are directed towards Earth, they can cause geomagnetic storms, leading to disturbances in Earth's magnetic field and potentially impacting power grids and satellite operations.
