Atonal music is a broad term used to describe music that lacks a traditional tonal center or key. Instead of relying on a hierarchy of notes with a tonic that provides a sense of resolution, atonal compositions explore dissonant harmonies and melodic structures without a clear point of gravity. This departure from tonality emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a way to expand the expressive possibilities of music.

Early proponents of atonality sought to break free from the conventions of classical harmony, which had become, for some, overly predictable and restrictive. Composers began to experiment with equalizing the importance of all twelve notes in the chromatic scale, rather than privileging certain notes over others. This led to the development of techniques such as serialism, most famously associated with Arnold Schoenberg and his students Alban Berg and Anton Webern, where musical elements like pitch, rhythm, and dynamics are organized in predetermined series.

Atonal music can often sound challenging or unsettling to listeners accustomed to tonal music, due to its frequent use of dissonance and the absence of familiar melodic and harmonic resolutions. However, for its proponents, atonality offers a richer and more complex palette for musical expression, capable of conveying a wider range of emotions and ideas. It has been a significant influence on many subsequent musical developments, including much of 20th-century avant-garde music and contemporary classical composition.
