The atburðarhóp, or rescue group, is a volunteer organization in Iceland that provides emergency response for search and rescue, avalanche rescue, and other natural hazards. Atburðarhoparnir function predominantly in the remote and mountainous regions of the country where professional emergency services cannot reach quickly. Each group is autonomous, often established by local communities with a strong tradition of outdoor activity.

The core activities of an atburðarhóp include conducting rescues in wilderness settings, assisting in avalanche incidents, and serving as a first responder for medical emergencies in isolated areas. Members receive comprehensive training in wilderness first aid, navigation, rope techniques, helicopter support coordination, and emergency communication. The training is organized by the Icelandic Search and Rescue Association (ISRA) and supplemented by periodic exercises in collaboration with the Icelandic Coast Guard and the military.

Atburðarhóp members are typically experienced mountaineers, hikers, or fishermen who dedicate part of their time to preparing and participating in rescue callouts. The groups maintain equipment such as rifles, skis, snowmobiles, radios, and helipads for emergency evacuations. Equipment is donated, purchased through community fundraising, or granted through support from local municipalities and national charities.

In addition to rescue duties, atburðarhóp members engage in community education about safety, conduct risk assessments for popular hiking routes, and collaborate with meteorological services to anticipate dangerous weather conditions.
