asturiano

Asturiano is a term used in Spanish with two main senses. It can denote a person from Asturias, the autonomous community in northern Spain, or refer to the Asturian language spoken there. When used as a language name, it is also called asturianu or, in older terminology, bable.

The Asturian language is a Romance language of the Ibero-Romance group. It developed from Latin and is part of the wider Asturleonese family, closely related to Leonese and Cantabrian varieties. Its classification as a distinct language or as a separate lect within a dialect continuum has been debated among scholars, but it is widely treated and taught as a language with its own norms and literature. The language exhibits several dialects, with Western and Central varieties being the most commonly referenced.

Geographically, Asturian is primarily spoken in the Principality of Asturias, with historical and minority presence in neighboring areas of León and Castile and León. In recent decades there have been formal efforts to promote and protect the language through regional laws, educational programs, media, and cultural institutions.
