The asthenosphere is a highly viscous, mechanically weak and ductile region of the upper mantle of Earth. It lies below the lithosphere, which is the rigid outer layer of the planet. The asthenosphere extends from the base of the lithosphere to a depth of about 410 to 660 kilometers. It is characterized by its ability to deform and flow slowly over geological timescales.

This plastic-like behavior of the asthenosphere is crucial for plate tectonics. The rigid lithospheric plates essentially float on top of this slowly flowing layer, allowing them to move and interact with each other. Convection currents within the asthenosphere, driven by heat from the Earth's interior, are thought to be the primary force behind this plate movement.

The composition of the asthenosphere is similar to that of the rest of the upper mantle, primarily silicate rocks rich in iron and magnesium. However, the temperatures and pressures within the asthenosphere are higher than in the lithosphere, leading to a lower viscosity and greater ductility. Partial melting, although occurring at a very low percentage, also contributes to its weak mechanical strength and ability to flow. Understanding the properties and dynamics of the asthenosphere is fundamental to comprehending geological processes such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, and mountain building.
