Assistevano is the imperfect indicative form of the Italian verb assistere, in the third-person plural. As a member of the -ere verb class, its present stem is assist-, and the imperfect is formed by adding the standard -avo/-avi/-ava/-avamo/-avate/-avano endings, yielding assistevo, assistevi, assisteva, assistevamo, assistevate, assistevano.

The verb assistere has two primary senses. In transitive use, it means to help or aid someone, as in assistere una persona in difficoltà (to assist a person in trouble). In intransitive use, it can mean to be present at or attend an event, as in assistere al congresso (to attend the congress) or assistevano al dibattito (they were attending the debate). The imperfect form assistevano therefore conveys past ongoing or habitual action: “Durante la crisi, i soccorritori assistevano i feriti” (During the crisis, rescuers were assisting the injured) or “I partecipanti assistevano al concerto ogni sera” (The attendees were attending the concert every evening).

In modern Italian, the distinction between the senses is typically clear from the surrounding prepositions and objects: assistere qualcuno (to assist someone) versus assistere a qualcosa/assistere a un evento (to attend something). Assistevano, as with other imperfect forms, often situates actions in a past time frame with a sense of continuity or repetition.
