Asennemuoto is a linguistic term used in Finnish to describe the grammatical mood of finite verbs. It refers to the speaker’s attitude toward the action or state described by the verb, such as whether it is a fact, a command, a possibility, or a hypothetical situation. In Finnish grammar, asennemuoto is considered alongside tense (aikamuoto) and aspect as part of the verb’s inflectional system.

The typical asennemuodot (moods) include several categories. The indikatiivi (indicative) is used for statements of fact or questions about reality. The imperatiivi (imperative) is used for commands or requests. The konditionaali (conditional) expresses hypothetical conditions or polite requests. The potentiaali (potential) mood conveys possibility, probability, or uncertainty and is more common in formal or literary language. Different asennemuodot interact with person and number, so the verb form changes to reflect who is performing the action and how many do it.

In practice, asennemuoto helps distinguish meaning beyond tense alone. For example, the same verb can appear in several moods to shift the speaker’s stance: a plain statement in indicative, a command in imperative, or a hypothetical scenario in conditional. Finnish learners and linguists analyze verb conjugations by identifying the active mood, the tense within that mood, and subject agreement.
